Morpho is a lending protocol built around Morpho Blue, a minimal primitive for creating isolated markets, with MetaMorpho vaults that allocate deposits across those markets through risk curators. Morpho unbundles lending into an immutable primitive plus an external curation layer. A Morpho variable-rate market (Morpho Blue) pairs exactly one collateral asset with one loan asset and fixes four parameters at creation, the oracle, the interest rate model, the LLTV and the two assets, after which they persist in perpetuity; market creation is permissionless and requires no governance vote, though the LLTV and IRM must be drawn from governance-approved sets (Morpho docs). Governance-approved LLTVs are 0, 38.5, 62.5, 77.0, 86.0, 91.5, 94.5, 96.5 and 98.0 percent, and the only approved IRM is AdaptiveCurveIRM (Morpho docs). Because each market is isolated and immutable, risk selection moves to vault curators: MetaMorpho and Vaults V2 allocate depositor funds across markets, so the depositor is really buying a curator's credit judgment. In 2026 Morpho added a fixed-rate, fixed-term protocol, Midnight, launched on Base in July 2026, in which lenders and borrowers propose their own rates and maturities instead of relying on a utilisation curve (Binance Square).
Instead of one big pool, Morpho Blue markets each fix a collateral, loan asset, oracle and liquidation setting; curators build vaults on top, more modular and risk-specific than Aave.
- Morpho Blue: Minimal immutable lending primitive: each market fixes collateral, loan asset, oracle, and LLTV. - MetaMorpho vaults: Curated vaults that allocate supplier liquidity across Morpho Blue markets with supply caps. - MORPHO token: Governance token for the Morpho DAO and protocol fee routing.
- MORPHO (MORPHO): Token, DAO governance token - maUSDC, mcUSDC (and other Optimizer wrappers) (maUSDC): Receipt, Lending Receipt Token
- Smart Contract: Upgradeable or complex lending logic can fail under edge-case liquidations or parameter misconfiguration. - Oracle: Stale or manipulated price feeds impair collateral valuation and liquidations. - Collateral: Correlated collateral drawdowns or listing errors can create bad debt in money markets. - Liquidity: Thin borrow/supply depth impairs exits and liquidations during market stress. - Governance: Parameter changes, listings, and emissions are controlled by token holders or delegates. - Curator: MetaMorpho curators choose market allocations; poor curator decisions isolate bad outcomes to vault depositors.
- Underwriting: similar in that Not done by the protocol. Anyone can create a market permissionlessly with any oracle and collateral; the underwriting decision is made by the vault curator who chooses which markets to allocate to; differs in that The SPV issues; the fund manager decides which tranches to hold - Collateral: similar in that One ERC20 collateral asset per market, priced by a market-specific oracle contract chosen at creation and immutable thereafter; differs in that A single defined collateral pool per deal, with a named valuation agent fixed in the deal documents - Settlement: similar in that On-chain and atomic; each market persists as long as the chain is live and is licensed under BUSL-1.1 converting to GPL; differs in that Deal terms fixed at closing; no post-closing amendment without noteholder consent - Rate setting: similar in that AdaptiveCurveIRM, the only governance-approved interest rate model for variable markets; Midnight instead lets lenders and borrowers propose their own rates and maturities; differs in that Floating-rate notes priced off a formula, versus a fixed-coupon private placement negotiated bilaterally - Recourse on default: similar in that Anyone can liquidate a position above its LLTV by repaying debt for discounted collateral. Losses beyond that are borne by the specific vault holding the market, as in the MEV Capital vault that took roughly 3.6% bad debt from sdeUSD/USDC; differs in that Tranche investors absorb the loss on their own deal; no cross-deal support - Regulation: similar in that Unregulated protocol governed by a French nonprofit; governance powers are limited to the fee switch (capped at 25% of borrower interest), LLTV and IRM whitelisting, treasury and license grants; differs in that Regulated securitisation with a risk-retention rule and a licensed manager
